How to buy the right setting?

Always try to match your loose diamond shape with the different type of settings and prongs

Prongs can have 6 clasps or 4 clasps, depending on your personal choice

The prongs come in different sizes, each prong's size is different for different carat weights.

For example, if you diamond is between 1.00 and 1.50 carat, the prong size is different from diamond which is between 1.50 and 2.00 carat.

Please get the correct prong size for your diamond. If choose a prong setting that is too large for your diamond, you are in a high danger of losing your diamond stone.

By selecting the right prong size, this will insure your diamond stone's protection.

Different type of Diamond Setting

Classic Solitaire Setting

These are settings that can be made of Yellow Gold, White Gold, or Platinum. These settings do not have any sidestones, they only have one prong in the middle to hold your center loose diamond stone.  They are considered to be the most classic and popular setting.  They are less expensive as they do not have any diamond or other stones variations on the settings themselves.

Setting with Side Stones

These are settings with side stones (diamonds or other colored gems).  They can be made of White Gold, Yellow Gold, or Platinum.

They are usually a single band, slightly thick and they have sidestones each sides of the prong.

Three Stone Setting

These are settings that have 2 side stones (diamonds or other colored gems) on each side of the setting. The middle prong is for your center diamond stones, usually they arrange the biggest diamond/colored gem stone in the center prong, and two other smaller diamonds/colored gems on each side of the prongs.

Setting with Matching Bands

These are settings with matching diamond bands.  One band has the middle prong to hold your loose diamond stones. This setting can have little sidestones, which can be in channel setting or pave setting.

The second matching band do not have the middle prong to hold any center diamond, they usually have little diamonds/gems all around the band, or they have little diamonds on half of the band.  This is another example of classic setting which is very popular also.

Matching your diamond with a Necklace

It's better to match the shape of your diamond necklace with the same shape of your diamond ring. They look better together.

Solitaire Pendant is a classic, one stone diamond pendant, that looks real elegant. They can be worn alone or with a matching bracelet, earring, or diamond ring.

Fancy cuts such as Star, Round, Music Notes etc are available for diamond pendant and they are universal regardless of the shape of your diamond stone.

The 3-stone diamond pendant is another style that looks compatible with your other jewelry, regardless of their shapes.

Matching your diamond with your Earrings

To have a matching shape for your earrings and diamond ring is recommended. They look better as opposed to having one shape diamond for your earrings and another shape for your diamond ring.

The shape of diamond earrings come in different shapes for example the 3-stone earrings, diamond hoop earrings, pave set diamond earrings, classic solitaire earrings etc.

Fancy shape diamond earrings can go with almost any other diamond shape because their shapes are unique.  They can be star shaped, moon shaped, heart shaped etc.

They are sometimes referred to as "fancy" cut diamond earrings.

Matching your diamond with your Bracelets

Again, if you have a matching set shape of diamond jewelries, they look better together. However, it's not necessary, depending on your preference.

Diamond bracelets come in different styles, they can be pave-set style diamonds, channel-set style diamonds, fancy-shape diamond bracelets such as trinkets with stars, moons and sun diamonds.  If you have the classic tennis bracelets, it looks better if you match the shape of your diamond bracelets with your diamond ring or diamond necklace.

Should I buy my setting locally?

Yes- It's always better for you to see how a certain diamond stone looks with your selected setting.

You can have the jeweler set your stone and your ring is ready to be used.

You can see a larger selection of stocked diamond settings from your local jewelry stores.

You can have the option to have your setting engraved with your initials or symbols.

No-It's more expensive to purchase your setting locally. The reason is because they stock their settings and they have to pay the rents, overhead costs etc.

Most people do not like to wait for their stones to be set, they want it right away and buying your setting online do not give you the option of having the diamond ring ready to be used.

However, if you are certain of a certain type of setting such as the classic solitaire setting, you can go ahead and purchase them online and save you a bunch of money.

Once the settings have been engraved with your personal letters, it's not returnable. When placing a setting online, it's better that you have them ship the setting to you first, and after you receive it, see if that's the one you like, and if it is, return it to them to have the setting engraved.

Even though it's more hassle to do it, this will insure you have the right setting that you want.

Then you can proceed to buying the center diamond and have them set it altogether for you.

The settings available from your local jewelry stores tend to be more expensive.
